Intent

At Little Bowden, PSHCE is our main curriculum driver. We recognise the importance Personal, Social, Health, Citizenship and Economic Education has on our pupils in readying them for secondary school and the wider world. We have a range of highly-skilled teachers and support staff who have been trained in delivering an inclusive and diverse PSHCE curriculum. We believe that the skills learnt in PSHCE lessons as children progress through our school will support them in making progress in other key areas of the curriculum. Our main aims for our PSHCE curriculum are as follows:

·         To enhance skills for communication, empathy and healthy relationships which underpin both success in learning and positive relationships;

·         To support the development of resilience, self-esteem, self-efficacy and aspiration through our ‘Routes to Resilience’ programme;

·         To offer accurate and relevant knowledge to support decisions about personal wellbeing and health;

·         To explore the relevance of knowledge for personal situations and decision making;

·         To offer opportunities to explore, clarify and if necessary challenge, their own and others’ values, attitudes, beliefs, rights and responsibilities, especially through our ‘No Outsiders’ programme;

·         To offer the skills and strategies they need to live healthy, safe, fulfilling, responsible and balanced lives.

Implementation

The curriculum has been designed to ensure that key areas of learning are re-visited consistently year on year. In the Autumn Term, ‘Myself and My Relationships’ is where we start the academic year, as pupils are new to their year groups; building new relationships with new members of staff and re-building relationships with peers. In Years 2, 4 and 6, the curriculum begins with a Citizenship unit. This studies rights, rules and responsibilities in a progressive manner. In half term 3, each year group covers a Citizenship unit aimed at promoting diversity. In conjunction with this, each individual unit of work ends with a text from the ‘No Outsiders’ programme, aimed at promoting equality and diversity. Half term 4 is where each year group covers Relationships and Sex Education. Each individual lesson is outlined in our Medium Term Plans and our approach to SRE can be found in our SRE policy. In the summer term, the curriculum continues to study healthy lifestyles, including managing risk, personal safety and healthy lifestyles. Again, many of these topic are in a spiral form to ensure breadth and depth of coverage. Finally, again in Years 2, 4 and 6, the children study how to be safe in our digital world. This is supplemented by our Computing curriculum, where ‘Online Safety’ has been mapped out for each year group.

Impact

As a result of receiving this education, pupils who leave Little Bowden will be happy, confident children who will become caring global citizens. Senior leaders will regularly monitor behaviour trends across the school and adjust teachings as required in order to raise awareness of specific topics. Children will be assessed on their understanding at the end of each lesson. Twice a year, senior leaders will conduct a pupil voice questionnaire to gain the view of children within our school. In addition to this, our Inclusion Team regularly check ‘Class Charts’ to determine how pupils are feeling and triage any worries or concerns pupils may be having in class. The regular monitoring and assessment of pupil’s feelings and emotions will allow us to make minor adjustments where required to support all pupils in our school and ensure that they leave Little Bowden as well-rounded citizens.
