Intent
At Little Bowden Primary School, our high-quality art and design education will engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. They will know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
At Little Bowden, we will aim to produce creative work, exploring children's ideas and recording their experiences to become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques. We will evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design. At Little Bowden we will know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
Implementation
Our curriculum map has a carefully planned approach to teaching Art and Design to ensure a good coverage of the key skills alongside of a knowledge of Art History to support their learning. Art and Design at Little Bowden allows pupils to be creative, inspired and see the influence of artists throughout history in their creative projects.
Our art curriculum is carefully organised from Year 1 – Year 6 into the seven focus areas of learning (shown in the progression map) that will enable the children to develop as artists. These are: painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, textiles, printing and the works of famous artists. These focus areas will be taught throughout the school and revisited to ensure progression and development of skills in Art and Design.
Our Art and Design curriculum uses a range of materials creatively to design and make creative pieces of artwork. We will use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share our ideas, experiences and imagination. At Little Bowden, we will develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space and learn about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work. Pupils should be taught to develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design. In Little Bowden, pupils will use their ‘Ideas books’ to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials.
At Little Bowden, the Art and Design curriculum will contribute to children’s personal development in creativity, independence, judgement and self-reflection. This will be seen in them being able to talk confidently about their work, and sharing their work with others. Progress will be shown through outcomes and through recording their process in their Ideas books.
Impact
Children’s skills will be assessed and developed by the teacher during lessons and through critical discussion and self-reflection at the end of each unit. Children’s progress is monitored by using informal assessments such as observations, pupil voice and children recording in their Ideas book and final pieces.
Books are monitored throughout the year and pupil voices are heard to ensure the content/skills are covered as planned and that children are retaining their knowledge and understanding. Monitoring will also ensure that children are able to use artistic vocabulary linked to the subject and reflect on what they have created.
At Little Bowden, children have opportunities to share their learning with each other, their parents and carers and other learners through corridor displays, school based and external exhibitions, competitions and community floats.
